Southern California

Sailing Around Southern California

Southern California is a fantastic place for sailing! There are many destinations less than a day's journey away, allowing one to do coastal cruising or a "passage" to one of the wonderful islands. Coastal cruising will find you enjoying the thrills and relaxation of traveling by harnessing the power of the wind as you visit some of the many ports in and near San Diego, Newport, Redondo Beach, Long Beach, Los Angeles' Marina Del Rey, and Ventura. Few places offer so many wonderful destinations for the coastal and day sailor. Whether you're an old salt, or a new crew member, you'll find the experience is incomparable.

The waters of Southern California are full of marine life, another treat for the coastal sailor. It's not at all uncommon to find oneself in the company of dolphins and porpoises, sea lions, flying fish... Troll a line behind and you'll quickly find you have more fish than you can possibly eat! While the water isn't tropical warm, it's far warmer than most sailing locations in North America.

There are literally hundreds of marinas open to those who sail the waters of Southern California. Guest slips are available at many of them. Spend a few hours or the night, and treat yourself to the sights and sounds, tastes and smells of each of those unique harbors.

If you make it out to Catalina, you'll probably tie off to a can and head on in to Avalon. There are dining and shopping opportunities, as well as entertainment and a large casino! If you're in a mellow mood, you may want to grab a quick bite to eat or return to the boat with some fresh groceries, and then read a book or take a stroll. Catalina makes for a good weekend trip. You can sail around the island, take in all sides. Or if you'd like, you can hike a bit, check out the buffalo herd and the wildlife there. Catalina even has bald eagles nesting on it! What an amazing sailing destination!

As the sun sets on another golden day, you'll find yourself bathed in a tranquility most land-lovers seldom experience. Enjoy the moment, then stow your gear, and get ready for a Pacific evening full of whatever you prefer. If you like live music and a bit of partying, that's sure to be there for you at any of the dockside establishments. The Cheesecake Factory in Marina Del Rey has long been a popular favorite, and there are many other choices nearby. Those who visit Redondo Beach can visit the boardwalk of the city marina, with its many restaurants, clubs and dancing, or prefer King Harbor's hotel and dining options. At most every port, you'll find places to go, things to do, and people to meet. That's one of the great things about sailing - you can take in as much or as little as you like, because you've always got your own little place right there with you.

Whatever your preference, you'll be living large, enjoying life, when you spend a day or weekend sailing in Southern California.
