Sailing around Miami, Florida
Miami, Florida... Warm waters, fair winds, and just a short hop to the gateway of the Caribbean. Hot summer nights, Cuban sandwiches, the most impressive skyline anywhere, non-stop club action where you can dance til dawn... or curl up with a book if a quiet evening at port is more what you had in mind. This most cosmopolitan of southern towns provides mariners with more abundant options that please than most any other port town in the country!
Whether you hug the shoreline or explore the barrier islands, you'll still enjoy nearly perfect weather most of the year. What's more, there's something for everyone, from fun and frolicking in a little sunfish or a Hobie cat, to the largest of ocean-going catamarans, you're sure to have a truly amazing time.
Miami is on the Atlantic, but the waters are warm, fed by the Gulf Stream which runs offshore and parallel to the coastline --- right off of Miami's beaches, making it a beautiful tropical oasis. The water is warm, the breezes are balmy. What's not to like?
If you're a coastal sailor, you're in luck. Slide on down along the the beaches and islands all the way to Key West if you like, exploring each of the cays along the way! Just want to romp about a bit for the day? Biscayne Bay's protected blue waters beckon! Want to check out points north? You can ply the Intracoastal Waterway in safety, protected from the open ocean, with plenty of elbow room to spare. If you're comfortable going offshore a ways and have the time to spare, check out the Bimini island chain! Yep, you can sail from Miami to Nassau or the Bahamas!
Ports? Too many to list. Clubs? Ditto. There's plenty of Salsa everywhere you turn in Miami... as well as cultural excellence, if that's more your style. There are literally thousands of places to explore and enjoy! You'll be living large on your way down to Margaritaville! Whether it's adult libations you're after or some solid nourishment, you'll find it anywhere and everywhere you look, all over the region!
If you enjoy snorkeling or SCUBA, you're in some of the very best warm-water dive locations in the nation. The warm water is shallow, so you can see everything! In many places, you SCUBA divers don't even have to think about bottom time. If you're selective, you'll be in less than one atmosphere the entire time!
If fishing is your thing, drop an eco-safe anchor and enjoy a relaxing afternoon, or troll a line behind. Pretty soon you'll be up to your ears in grins and excitement! There's reef fishing, kite fishing, bottom fishing, shark fishing.. you'll be set for sailfish, shark, Amberjack, kingfish, snapper, grouper, swordfish, Mahi, Marlin, barracuda... all right there in the Gulf Stream! The waters off of south Florida are truly rich, an amazing opportunity for fun and adventure!
If you could pick just one place to make way from in the U.S., it'd have to be Miami. No other location offers so much, or so much diversity. The water is warm and beautiful, the weather is most often fine, and the memories made each day are second to none. You owe it to yourself to be sailing Miami!
